Before Abigail Garvey got married in 2000, anyone could easily Google her. Then she swapped her maiden name for her husband's last name, Wilson, and dropped out of sight.

In Web-search results for her new name, links to Ms. Wilson's epidemiology research papers became lost among all manner of other Abigail Wilsons, ranging from 1980s newspaper wedding announcements for various Abigail Wilsons to genealogy records listing Abigail Wilsons born in the 1600s and 1700s. When Ms. Wilson applied for a new job, interviewers questioned the publications she listed on her résumé because they weren't finding the publications in online searches, Ms. Wilson says. (See Google results for Abigail Garvey and Abigail Wilson.)

This article is right on the money. Google can make or break you so it pays to think about how well you are doing in Google personally or how high your web site is ranking. Take time to research how Google indexes and ranks it's search results.

You won't beleive how many times people ask "are you Shawn Gordon with all that Linux stuff". My mind says "I can be, if you'd like" and my mouth says "nope". But to Clarify I think that guy is named Shawn M. Gordon. I'm Shawn K. (for Kennedy) Gordon. A prime example of why middle names are important.

My family is the only Nagelmakers in Canada and there is only a small group of them in Holland (from what I've seen). I guess I really lucked out, because even if you just Google Nagelmakers I'm the top result, as well as most of the subsequent results as well.

      Brian Ford

Despite many recent claims that my common name makes me anonymous:

My Newsvine column is #5 in a search for Brian Ford.

My Flickr Profile is usually on the first or second page.

One year ago -- Googling "Brian Ford" wouldn't have found me in the top 100 pages.

Newsvine definitely has a bit of Google Juice for those who put in consistent effort.

Searching "Brian Ford" via Yahoo, my Newsvine Page is the #1 hit.

Methinks she's either not writing enough -- or too few people are reading what she does write.

      Or both.

I noticed almost the same results as you on my name. I am now number six on page one.

I Google myself from time to time because an article or thread like this will appear, and I get curious. I checked a few months ago, and you had to drill in quite a few pages to find me (And even then, it was easy to overlook my entry).

I also noticed that the NPR science writer changed his name to Daniel to help distinguish himself from the rest of the pack (There is an insurance agency, a forest products company, and the president of the America First Party to compete with).

I fill up 2 pages worth of my real exploits... though it is only because I have done a lot of news grouping and forum posting in the major Linux forums/news groups... so a lot of linking.

I changed a name once in another account of mine at OS News and when I checked google a few months later... it connected my real name with my major web handle and I flipped out.. I changed it back and in a few days it was gone from the cache.

I don't know whether people who have a very popular name like "John Smith" (also a beer) are very lucky or very unlucky.

Just my first name is enough.

          6+ million hits.

          I'm #1.

Start adding my last name or nickname (KuraFire) and the results become incredibly dense with results that are all about me.

It sure helps being a prominent member of the web standards movement ;-) (and having a unique first name within that community)

I'll stop being cocky in a few minutes, no worries. :D

My internet name, newsaddikt, turns up all the right sites when its Googled. The top 2 sites had been the blogs I use. W/ the top site being my main work blog newsaddikt.wordpress.com. Which was great. But when I opened a newsvine account, that became the top site.

Heh, this is actually my safeguard in having my real name on here, I figure if ever necessary to go incognito, I can just take my husband's last name.

Nothing under my name but Newsvine stuff and aquarium fish profiles.

What kind of lame-ass company relies on Google alone to find someone's publications? And then only Googles under their name, not the subject or title of the publications? Sounds like she dodged a bullet with that company.

I need to ask - are people using inverted commas when they google their names? I miss out on number 5 in the first 14 results if I miss out inverted commas. With inverted commas I'm in all but 2 of the 28 search results.

Using inverted commas searches for that phrase exactly so if I'm looking for someone (or myself) I use them. I also try the search without to see how the results differ as you did.

I'm a baseball player from the 30s and 40s, according to Google. I try my best to keep my meatspace name from becoming common information on the intarwebs. You have to get really specific with search engine queries to find anything about me. There are apparently a few other people on the planet that share my name, but alas... nothing about me.

A search for my screenname pulls up quite a few hits though, about half of which are actually me. As of this post, 70% of the first page of results are for my content -- Twitter, Jaiku, Newsvine, some forums, and my own site.

If I search for "Ryan Joseph" I don't get anything relating to me. But search for my universal website name, ryaninc, and the entire first page and part of the second is all me (minus the ryaninc.com, which I unfortunately do not own). Not too bad, methinks. :-)
