The other day I got into a somewhat heated discussion about why Linux is a viable alternative desktop OS. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to move the other side past the rhetoric and myths that seem to surround Linux. It is because of this discussion that I am writing this…as a way to give accurate information. Let's start by looking at some of the most common myths.
Why indeed!
Linux gave me the chance to learn new skills, gain deeper insights into how computers work and provided an excellent platform to develop on. Some people may be satisfied with going through life with blinders on and living the "status-quo". For those that enjoy the how/what/why of life, Linux is an excellent choice.
Exactly! As a non-geek and ex-Windows user, I was amazed to discover what computers could REALLY offer. I am still astounded, years after my conversion to linux, that most people are content with the very limited amount and variety of software sold in a shop or even on the net. I can get more and better on linux for free! And, nevermind the money, the ability to learn the whys and hows of the computer are so liberating.
While not a full blown technogeek I do use linux and find many interesting things about computers and this operating system. I have come to realise the majority of the windows users are 'appliance operators' who figure out enough to be able to use the basic functions on the windows system and do not have the time or comfort level to be able to explore the full capacity of the computer. This is why I.T. is so prevalent. Especially for senior citizens, the computer can be intimidating. Most users also have other interests than plunking on the keyboard for hours at a time learning all the nuances. I see linux more as the sports version of an os where the users can explore methods of raising the performance of their equipment because they can get under the 'hood' and make changes to the engine (o.s.)
