Facebook's designers want to cut the clutter. The Palo Alto (Calif.) social networking site is readying an extensive overhaul of its core profile pages in an attempt to bring back the sleek aesthetic that helped fuel its early popularity. Executives say the redesign should hit the Web browsers of Facebook's 70 million worldwide users in the next few weeks.
The moves come in reaction to Facebook's becoming "more cluttered and harder for users to parse," according to Katie Geminder, the site's director of user experience and design, who oversees the design team working on the project.
Facebook can be kept uncluttered by users by not installing 10 000 applications. What kills Facebook for me is how you have to go through all these apps telling them you don't want them, which is basically friend-generated spam. The applications have incentives to make users spam their friends, and this is what I hate about the site.
I love scrabulous and being able to find old friends, but the rest basically sucks.
friend-generated spam
What a perfect term. This is exactly what will bring Facebook down. Right now it's a structured version of myspace. Some "friends" have 20 apps on their page and you can't even see a thing.. it's a mess.
I can't remember how many times I've installed an app to find out that it's not what was advertised or that I have to invite X number of friends in order for it to function. Not only does that make me uninstall the app, but it puts that developer on my black list.
The 'Block this application' feature is the best thing since sliced bread.
Except that you have to block each and every application that your undisciplined friends invite you to. I want a "Block all applications from friends always" function. If I want something I will find and install it.
It's about time!! I avoid friends whose profiles I know are overloaded with applications. I too love Scrabulous, and growing gifts are fun too, but everything else is just clutter and slows down the process. I'll be really happy to see a more streamlined, clean format.
With FB allowing so many applications it became just another myspace ripoff. Sure, some are nice, but some don't even work and are untested. And I agree Brad about the "add 10 friends" before using this app....ridiculous.
It is pretty spammy, but I do like the games and the flowers and the eggs....LOL Clipped to the 'Bookers group.
Looks like everyone is pretty much in agreement then. Too many apps (especially ones that serve no purpose)! I have seen many profiles that are a complete mess. Personally I have a number of apps on my page and look forward to the re-design where I can have these on a separate tab.
I'm sure everyone's done with this article, but a friend of mine was invited to the beta as a developer and he nabbed this screen.
