Windows 7, the replacement to the disastrous Windows Vista, is coming. It's just a matter of when, which is a question that came closer to being answered over the last week with Microsoft finally giving a hint over the release date.
Windows Vista has been nothing short of a disaster for Microsoft. Oh it's sold in okay numbers, but only because Microsoft has essentially forced PC manufacturers to switch from pre-installing Windows XP to the new operating system instead. In terms of customer satisfaction though, Vista has been a terrible product for Microsoft, and the sooner it is put out to pasture, the better.
I have a blog about how "awful Vista is" called "Hast la vista, Vista!" on Wordpress which charted my painful experiences as a Vista early adopter.
Vista is actually fine now. The various improvements and minor upgrades have over time sorted out the problems, and adding a proper graphics card resolved the performance issues. The rest is a few simple workarounds and learning to do some things in different ways.
Vista was a botched project but MS have got it serviceable now. The "Vista is rubbish" line taken in the article no longer holds and the reputation is far worse than the reality as it is today.
Vista's problem was that to make the leap from 2D to 3D user interface required a disproportionate increase in computing power and many early Vista PCs weren't up to the job because manufacturers skimped on spec. Also, the 3D interface doesn't make the most of the technology so the promised Wow! factor was not delivered.
I personally actually like the program. It has been easy for me. I had to buy a new printer because my printer didnt recognize the system...but that is the only problem. It also took me a few weeks to get used to, but I like it more than XP
With a release date of 2010, I suppose we can expect it to actually arrive in 2015, cost $1000, have an extra-heavy dose of DRM, and require a mainframe computer to run it.
